Irrigated red-brown earths in northern Victoria were surveyed to relate water-stable aggregation and organic carbon in the surface horizon to cultural practices. One or 2 seasons of commercial cropping with tomatoes decreased the water-stable aggregation by 36% and organic carbon by 14%, when compared with permanent pasture.

In one experiment, a cultivated red-brown earth was left untilled for 6 months over winter; the water-stable aggregation increased by 48%; the growth of ryegrass for 6 months in the same soil increased the water-stable aggregation by a further 35% when compared with the untilled bare control.

In a second experiment, the effects over 4 years of 2 different systems of soil management for continued row-cropping on the physical and biological properties of a red-brown earth are described. Both systems included reduced cultivation (compared with commercial systems) of permanent beds, slow wetting of the soil from furrows, traffic confined to permanent furrows, and barley grown in the winter and sunflowers in the summer. In one system (MC40), organic residues were retained each year and the soil cultivated to a depth of 40 mm; in the other system (NC150) organic residues were not retained and soil was cultivated to a depth of 150 mm. After 4 years in MC40, the stability was 38% higher and 10% lower than that found in commercial soils used for tomatoes and pasture respectively. In NC150, the stability was 12% higher and 28% lower than commercial soils used for tomatoes and pasture respectively. The bulk density and penetrometer resistance tended to increase with time in all plots, but were still within limits suggested for unrestricted root growth. Each summer, water reached the centre of all beds within 8 h of irrigation. Populations of earthworms decreased in all plots, and probably reflect the unusually wet winter in 1981, and the unusually dry winter in 1982. The ratio of earthworms from MC40:NC150 increased to 3:1 by October 1982. The yields of sunflowers (2–3 Mg ha−1) in all plots compared favourably with commercial yields of crops grown on less fragile soils in northern Victoria.  相似文献

The transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture had revolutionary consequences for the development of human societies. Crops such as wheat, barley, lentil, pea and chickpea played a crucial role in the establishment of complex civilizations in south west Asia. Wild emmer wheat (Triticum dicoccoides) was one of the first cereals to be domesticated in the Fertile Crescent between c. 12,000 and c. 10,000 years ago. This step provided the key for subsequent bread wheat evolution. Wild emmer is found today in the western Fertile Crescent in Jordan, Syria and Israel, the central part of southeastern Turkey and mountain areas in eastern Iraq and western Iran. In this review, we summarize issues concerning geography and domestication of wild emmer wheat based on published molecular and archaeobotanical data and on our recent findings. We suggest that modern domestic tetraploid wheats derived from wild emmer lines from southeast Turkey. However, our understanding of emmer domestication is not complete. The “dispersed-specific” domestication model proposed for einkorn might well be appropriate also for emmer.  相似文献

Context

Encroachment of woody vegetation represents a significant global threat to biodiversity in grasslands, but practices used to reverse encroachment are rarely evaluated comprehensively. Several factors may drive encroachment, such as land use history, alteration of disturbance regimes, and local environment, but their relative importance is poorly understood. Another complicating factor is that encroachment may proceed via positive feedbacks that result in thresholds, beyond which its reversal is difficult.

Objectives

We ask what impact reintroducing frequent fire has on encroachment relative to the influences of landscape context and historical vegetation. We investigate whether woody cover frequency distributions suggest that feedbacks reinforce encroachment after a threshold of woody cover is surpassed.

Methods

We analyze aerial photos in glade grasslands in Missouri, USA, to assess encroachment patterns over a 75-year period. Fire was excluded from this landscape for the first 45 years, and then reintroduced at varying frequencies in the last 30 years.

Results

Woody vegetation cover increased sevenfold from 1939 to 2014 overall. After the reintroduction of prescribed fire, woody cover stayed approximately constant in burned glades, but continued increasing in unburned glades. Woody cover followed bimodal frequency distributions in burned areas. Fire-tolerant vegetation tended to encroach near historically wooded areas, while fire-sensitive vegetation responded more to fire history.

Conclusions

Altered disturbance regimes, in addition to numerous recognized drivers, can cause ecosystem state changes associated with losses to biodiversity. Conducting management early in the encroachment process and restoring grasslands at broad landscape scales may help counteract local feedbacks that promote encroachment.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of nitrogen (0, 120, and 240 kg N ha−1) and phosphorus (0, 90, and 180 kg P2O5 ha−1) doses on some tuber quality traits of the potato cultivar Agria under the ecological conditions of Erzurum in the years 2005 and 2006. The effects of N levels were significant only on the protein content of tubers while the P levels only significantly affected the oil content of the crisps. No significant N × P interaction effects were found on any of the traits evaluated. Based on these results, it could be concluded that the potato crop should be fertilized with 120 kg ha−1 N and that phosphorus fertilizers should be added when soils are P deficient in the Erzurum region.  相似文献

We examined the physical, physicochemical, and cooking properties of 91 kabuli chickpea landraces from Turkey, using two cultivars (İnci and İzmir-92) as controls. All landraces were grown under the same agroclimatic conditions to eliminate variance caused by genotype × environment interactions. There was high diversity among the landraces in the contents of protein (17.55–23.31%), fat (4.45–6.11%), ash (2.54–3.41%), fiber (2.03–4.18%), starch (41.76–49.07%), moisture (6.39–10.57%), 100-seed weight (25.03–51.67 g), hydration capacity (0.2585–0.6169 g/ml), swelling index (0.7207–1.1859), swelling capacity (0.15–0.32 ml seed−1), cooking time (33–72 min), and seed density (0.8450–1.4800 g/ml). Regional analysis of landraces showed significant differences with respect to nutritional characteristics and cooking parameters. There were also significant relationships between various seed quality and cooking parameters. Together, our results provide an initial step toward identification of chickpea landraces that may be useful for development of high-quality chickpea cultivars.  相似文献

An investigation has been described on the relationship of body length, age and sex with adipose fin length and the number of androgen receptor (AR)-containing cells in the adipose fin as a secondary sexual characteristic for brown trout (Salmo trutta fario). Firstly, body and adipose fin lengths of 2- to 5-year-old brown trout were measured. Thereafter, these fish were killed by decapitation, then their sexes were determined, and adipose fins were excised. The cellular bases of AR binding activities in the adipose fins were analyzed with an antibody against human/rat AR peptide. Immunocytochemistry and western blotting techniques were performed with this antibody. Analysis of morphological measurements indicated that body length and age had a linear relationship with adipose fin length. The coefficients of determination for the body length and age were 0.92 and 0.85 in the male fish and 0.76 and 0.73 in the female fish against the adipose fin length, respectively. At 2 years of age, cells in the adipose fin did not exhibit AR immunoreactivity. However, AR-immunopositive cells were abundant in the adipose fin of 3- to 5-year-old fish. Moreover, the number of AR-immunopositive cells was significantly (P < 0.05) high in males and increased with age. These observations indicate that the adipose fin in the brown trout is a probable target for androgen action and that tissue function or development may to some extent be androgen dependent. In addition, it is likely that such an effect will be mediated by specific androgen receptors.  相似文献

As no information is available regarding the efficacy of using rice protein concentrate (RPC) to replace fishmeal (FM) in diets for European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), a trial was conducted to determine the optimum inclusion for European sea bass juveniles. Diets were formulated to replace 25%, 50% and 75% of fishmeal with RPC. Additional high level inclusion diets (50% and 75%) were supplemented with lysine and methionine to determine if these were limiting factors. Fish (18.0 ± 0.06 g) were fed the experimental diets for 12 weeks. The final mean weight and specific growth rate (SGR) were significantly higher in fish fed the control diet (diet FM) and low level RPC (diet RPC25) than in fish fed the other diets. The supplementation of the amino acids had a positive effect on growth, elevating the final weight of the high level RPC (RPC75 + AA) group above that of the non‐supplemented group (RPC75). However, this was still not comparable to fish fed FM and RPC25 diets. No significant differences in body composition were observed. A digestibility study demonstrated an inverse relationship between elevating inclusion levels of RPC and apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) for dry matter and lipid, with significantly lower values than the control being observed with RPC inclusions above 25%. The mesenteric fat index followed this trend. Circulating leucocyte levels, leucocyte ratios and serum lysozyme activity remained unaffected by dietary treatment. However, compared with the control group, fish fed RPC75, RPC50 + AA RPC75 + AA displayed significantly lower haematocrit values. The present study demonstrates that the inclusion of RPC at 140 g kg?1 (effectively replacing 25% of FM content) does not compromise European sea bass growth performance, body quality or basic haematological parameters. It is suggested that future studies including higher levels test the efficacy of additional amino acid supplementation (e.g. tryptophan).  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate nutritional values of selected commercial fish meals (FM) with two experiments in diets of turbot. In experiment I, five diets based on two Peruvian anchovy meals (one is a flame‐dried FM: Peru‐1 and the other steam‐dried FM: Peru‐2), a Danish FM (Danish LT), a domestic anchovy LT meal (Domestic LT) and an Alaskan white FM (WFM) as major protein source were formulated to contain 56% protein. The diets were fed to fish with an initial average weight of 119.4 ± 0.1 g for 9 weeks. Growth rate, feed utilization, whole body and visceral compositions, nitrogen, lipid and energy balances did not significantly change in Experiment 1 among the treatments. In Experiment 2, four diets based on three FMs (Domestic LT, Danish LT and Peru‐1) and their mixture (Mix FM) were formulated to contain 50% protein and fed to triplicated groups of fish with an average initial weight of 51.4 ± 0.1 g for 6 weeks. Once again, there were no significant differences in growth rate and feed consumption among the treatments. However, fish on Mix FM diet had significantly better FCR and PER than the others. The results of two experiment indicated that Danish LT and Domestic LT were better in terms of phosphorus (P) retention and losses than two Peruvian FMs and WFM, suggesting that although different sources of FMs were comparable in terms of growth and feed utilization, they could lead to substantial differences in environmental impacts.  相似文献

This study was carried out to compare the fattening performance and carcass traits of Chios male lambs fed under traditional and intensive feeding conditions. In the study, a total of 34 lambs were randomly separated into traditional (T) and intensive (I) groups in equal numbers. Lambs in group T were fed on ration prepared in local style and grazed in olive grove for 8 h/day. On the other hand, lambs in group I were fed on 255 g alfalfa hay animal−1 day−1 and ad libitum mixed feed. After a period of 8 weeks, lambs were transported to the slaughterhouse. The results showed that Chios lambs fed under intensive conditions has better performance and produced heavier carcass compared to those fed under traditional conditions. However, consumption of concentrate feed mixture was about twice as much in group I as in group T. Total feed consumption and feed conversion ratio was similar in each group. The values of carcass traits of lambs in group I were found to be significantly higher than those of group T. On the other hand, carcass fat thickness was slightly lower in group T. Traditional condition is considered to respond to better to consumer demands for lean lamb carcass.  相似文献
